Ancient Greeks in Croatia - historical exhibition => This exhibition presents the legacy of the ancient Greeks in Croatia. The most outstanding of all the artefacts and pieces of art on display is the famous Croatian Apoxyomenos, a bronze statue of an athlete cleaning his body after exercising, found in the vicinity of the Croatian island of Lošinj.
Including artefacts from over 30 different museums and private collections in Croatia, the exhibition offers an insight into the Greek presence in Croatia from the 12th to the 1st century BC, both chronologically and through various themes such as Art, Mythology, Religion and Necropolises.
The ancient Greeks were present in foreign lands mainly as a maritime and colonizing power, for which reason their legacy in Croatia is much richer than that in Slovenia, which only has a tiny stretch of the Adriatic coast. In Croatia, the Greeks established maritime trade routes, built several cities, and colonized the coastal region of Dalmatia.
The centrepiece of the exhibition is the Croatian Apoxyomenos, one of only eight known Apoxyomenos statues in the world. A whole half of the exhibition provides information about its discovery, analyses, studies and restoration. This is the second and the last time that the statue has been exhibited outside Croatia (the first time was in Florence in 2006/07, when it was viewed by over 80,000 people). Once the City Museum of Ljubljana exhibition closes, the statue will be moved to the Apoxyomenos Museum on the Island of Lošinj.
The exhibition is accompanied by a programme of creative workshops for families and individuals, evening readings of Greek myths, and other events. Exhibition tours for the general public and specific audiences are available.
